A Step of Faith and Boldness: Embracing a Calling Beyond a Career

Ian Rumanyika, CEO, Node Group Consult.

Over the last 17 years, I’ve been on an incredible journey of career progression and advancement. I’ve had the privilege of working with esteemed brands that value innovation and respect the expertise of professionals who deliver results. My experience in strategic communication and public relations has been fulfilling, with numerous opportunities to pioneer initiatives that have achieved remarkable success.

However, despite the satisfaction I’ve derived from my roles, I’ve often felt constrained by the limitations and gates that came with being part of a larger organization. I realized that I needed to take a step of faith and boldness to transition from merely doing what I loved to fulfilling a deeper calling. This calling is about leveraging my skills and experience to make a meaningful impact and leave a lasting legacy.

As I navigated this crossroads, I sought guidance from mentors who understand my vision and values. Jimmy Kiberu, a seasoned expert in his field, shared his wisdom: “Use the lapse to build that dream and leverage your corporate contacts. You’re in the sweetest spot now! Leverage it.” His words resonated deeply, and I knew I had to take action.

Another mentor, Nada Andersen, offered a unique perspective: “Ian, we often get derailed by jobs and forget that there’s a baby we made somewhere needing our attention. I’m glad you’re a responsible father to your business! Remember, you have a village if you need us to feed the baby, change the nappies, and all. You grow, we grow!” Her words reminded me that I don’t have to do it alone and that building a supportive network is crucial to success.

As I reflect on my journey, I realize that having an exit plan is crucial for any professional looking to make a meaningful impact. It’s about being bold, taking calculated risks, and spreading your wings to fly. When you plan your exit, you’re forced to think about your goals, your passions, and your aspirations. You’re also more likely to take action, rather than getting stuck in the status quo.

Family support is also vital in this journey. My wife’s words of encouragement still echo in my mind: “You have no idea what you’re capable of until you step out of the routine model, you’re in.” Her confidence in me was a powerful motivator, and I knew that with her support, I could overcome any obstacle.

Stepping into my new role at Node Group as CEO, represents a pivotal moment in my journey. It gives me the opportunity to unpack brands that need to be out there, shape narratives that inspire generations, and tell bold stories that can change lives. With the changing landscape in communications and AI influence, I’m driven to support African brands in creatively raising their voices and taking their rightful seat on the global stage.

However, I’m also aware that this journey won’t be without its challenges. My other mentor, said In the next phase you need to prepare for shocks and surprises, especially in your cash flows. This will be expected, and the difference will be how you react to and manage. Her words of wisdom reminded me that resilience and adaptability are essential for success in this new chapter.

My friend Nicholas Opiyo, my other mentor, a well-respected lawyer, Nicholas Opiyo left behind the predictability of corporate law to pursue human rights advocacy. As the founder of Chapter Four Uganda, he dedicated his work to defending civil liberties, supporting marginalized groups, and advancing justice, often at great personal risk.

As I step into this new chapter with Node Group a PR and Marketing agency, I am reminded that boldness isn’t about recklessness it’s about conviction. It’s about recognizing that Africa’s time is now, and that the stories we tell today will shape the opportunities we unlock tomorrow. We can no longer afford to whisper. Our voices, our creativity, and our stories must rise with confidence and clarity.

To anyone feeling that quiet nudge toward something greater, I see you. I know the doubts, the fears, the temptation to stay where it’s safe. But I also know the immense fulfillment that comes when you lean into your calling. Your skills, your experiences, your passions they’re not random. They are tools for impact, waiting for you to step out in faith and use them.

Whether your next chapter is in business, public service, community building, or the arts, remember that your greatest impact lies where your passion, your expertise, and your courage meet. In embracing this step of faith, I am not only betting on myself I am betting on the future and potential of African excellence, on the power of bold leadership, and on the belief that our stories, when told with conviction, can inspire generations to come. Let us do business and see you as my next client at Node Group.
