Stanbic Bank, in partnership with Busaiga SACCO, has reinforced its commitment to inclusive growth through investing UGX 20 million in healthcare in Kabarole District.

The bank organized a free medical camp and donated essential maternal health equipment to Nyantabooma Health Centre III, highlighting the growing role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in sustainable development.

The donation comprising a modern centrifuge, fetal dopplers, oxygen concentrators, blood pressure machines, stethoscopes, and 200 mama kits is the latest in Stanbic Bank’s broader CSR strategy aimed at strengthening Uganda’s healthcare systems, particularly in underserved communities.

The support aligns with the bank’s nationwide initiative under its Employee Community Initiative Programme, which has seen over 22,000 mama kits distributed to 85 health centres since 2021.

Tunde Thorpe, Executive Head of Business and Commercial Banking at Stanbic Bank, emphasized the business case behind community investment.

“This donation is not merely a gesture of goodwill; it embodies our purpose: ‘Uganda is our home; we drive her growth.’ Maternal health lies at the heart of this mission,” he said while stressing the importance of access to dignified healthcare as a foundation for socio-economic development.

The medical camp, held in Fort Portal, saw more than 350 residents receive free treatment. Screenings included cancer checks for 23 mothers, diabetes and blood pressure tests for 100 people, and HIV testing for another 100 demonstrating the bank’s practical approach to bridging healthcare access gaps in rural areas.

Located in Harugongo Sub-county, Nyantabooma Health Centre III serves over 17,000 patients annually but has long struggled with equipment and staffing shortages.

The new equipment is expected to ease pressure on Fort Portal Hospital and increase the facility’s capacity to manage maternal health cases locally.

Dr. Moses Gumisiriza, the facility’s In-Charge, welcomed the support, noting its potential to significantly reduce referrals and improve patient care.

“The teenage pregnancy rate in our sub-county stands at 27%, the highest in the district. Having better maternal health tools will directly impact how we care for vulnerable groups like adolescent mothers,” he said.

The initiative also reflects a growing trend where financial institutions integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into their operations.

Thorpe linked Stanbic’s efforts to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on health, gender equality, and public-private partnerships.

Godfrey Musumba, Chairperson of Harugongo Sub-county, urged residents to utilize the enhanced facility, while Dr. Brian Kisembo from the Kabarole District Health Office encouraged preventive care to reduce treatment costs.

Stanbic Bank staff members, led by Tunde Thorpe, Executive Head of Business and Commercial Banking, hand over vital equipment to Dr. Brian Kisembo, Assistant District Health Officer (DHO) of Kabarole District.

Meanwhile, Busaiga SACCO General Manager Mercy Kusemererwa praised Stanbic’s swift response to their call for partnership, saying the collaboration showcases how private-public cooperation can transform rural communities. “Healthy communities are the cornerstone of sustainable growth,” she said.

Thorpe also acknowledged King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s leadership in promoting health and development in the Tooro Kingdom, signaling Stanbic’s sensitivity to cultural and regional dynamics in its CSR engagements.

With CSR fast becoming a metric of long-term business sustainability and reputation, Stanbic Bank’s investment in health is a strategic move that reinforces both its brand equity and its commitment to Uganda’s development agenda.
