Journey to the Boardroom (JTB), a specialized corporate governance leadership development program, officially launched its third cohort on Monday, January 27, 2026, in Kampala, bringing together professionals from diverse sectors for intensive training aimed at preparing Uganda’s next generation of board members to lead with integrity and courage in what program leaders described as a critical moment for the country’s corporate governance landscape.
The launch event, held at the Multichoice offices in Kololo, Kampala, was flagged off by Justice Mike Chibita, with Professor Monica Chibita serving as special guest. Both delivered keynote addresses to the assembled cohort, setting the tone for what organizers say will be a rigorous, months-long journey toward board readiness. Program founder Janet Navvuga Bugembe presided over the ceremony, which marked the formal commencement of training for the newest class of aspiring directors.

Bugembe addressed governance challenges facing Uganda’s corporate and public sectors. “The boardroom needs leaders who are prepared to stand for what is right even when it is difficult,” she said. “I think you can see what is happening in Uganda today, and some of these are pain points and that is why we are here to raise the next generation of corporate leaders and board members who are going to make decisions that are going to change this country.”
Justice Chibita emphasized self-discipline and personal accountability. “The pain of discipline is better than the pain of regret,” he told participants. “It’s amazing how many things are within our control and we don’t do them. We watch things get spoiled and we tolerate mediocrity.”

Professor Monica Chibita cautioned against overextension in board service. “At the end of last year, I was on seven boards, actively. Seven. I will never do that again, never ever again. It’s foolish,” she said. “No matter what the opportunities are, you need to be selective. Learn to say no.”
The third cohort includes news anchor Sheila Tusiime, Ian Rumanyika (CEO, Node Group Consult), Dr. Joseph Mubiru (pharmaceutical leader), Dr. Fahad Ntale (CEO and business strategist), Sharon Mwebaze Ashaba (executive leader), Adellah Agaba Nyaruhuma (Human Capital strategist), Uthman Segawa (Director of Legal and Board Affairs, PPDA), Eva Nazziwa Lubowa (Director of HR, PPDA), and Kajoina Jemima Engelite (Legal Officer, Uganda Wildlife Authority).

Participants will undergo comprehensive training in corporate governance frameworks, financial literacy, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. The program combines technical skills with mentorship from experienced board members. Previous cohorts have produced notable alumni including Aisha Najjingo Muwanga, recently appointed Head of Corporate Banking at I&M Bank Uganda.

The program addresses documented gaps in board diversity across Uganda and East Africa while emphasizing ethical decision-making and moral courage alongside technical competencies. As Uganda’s economy expands and governance faces increased scrutiny from investors and regulators, JTB plays a crucial role in ensuring the next generation of board members is both technically competent and ethically grounded. Graduates will join the JTB alumni network, receiving ongoing support and board opportunity alerts.
