Today, we write about Ms. Doris Akol, who has proven to the world that closing one’s doors of success could be a blessing in disguise because it opens other doors to explore other areas and achieving even greater success.

Despite being dropped as the Commissioner General of Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on March 29, 2020, Akol has proven to be a figure whose significance will not easily fade, as her journey still stretches far and wide.

Countless best wishes and congratulatory messages flooded the internet upon her announcement as the Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund {IMF} Fiscal Affairs Department affirming her significance.

Many took to the internet, including media outlets, to congratulate Akol on her appointment as the Senior Economist at the IMF Fiscal Affairs Department three years ago, after being dropped from URA as its Commissioner General.

From being the Commissioner General of URA to assuming the position of Senior Economist at the IMF Fiscal Affairs Department, Akol’s journey towards success remains ongoing. This marks only the beginning.

The announcement of her new position came to light through the League of East African Directors (LEAD), where she holds membership, via their X-platform, formerly known as Twitter.

“On behalf of LEAD, we extend warm congratulations to Ms. Doris Akol on her appointment as a Senior Economist at the IMF Fiscal Department. Your new role marks the beginning of an exciting journey ahead. Here’s to a fantastic start to the year!” announced LEAD on its official X-platform.

Akol’s new position is a promotion from her previous role as a Technical Assistance Advisor at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which she has held since December 2021.

According to the International Monetary Fund, some of Akol’s key responsibilities include analysing and designing an appropriate mix of fiscal, monetary, and exchange rate policies to promote and maintain macroeconomic stability. She will also examine macro-financial linkages in an increasingly globalised world, address issues of good economic governance, and explore fiscal and external debt sustainability. Additionally, Akol will develop approaches to promoting regional and broader trade liberalisation.

As an economist in a functional department, Akol will be accountable for providing advice, developing policies, conducting research or delivering teaching in assigned fields. She may contribute to the world-class, ground-breaking research the IMF conducts on policy-related issues to shape their work, build expertise within member countries, and collaborate closely with area department economists in analysing and guiding how important current issues affect member countries.

Akol, who previously led the Ugandan tax body from 2014 up to 2020, when she was succeeded by John Musinguzi, adds to the ranks of other Ugandan women currently holding key positions at major international organisations and agencies. Notable figures include Justice Julia Sebutinde, serving at the International Court of Justice, and Winnie Byanyima, who leads the USAID.

Doris Akol’s achievements:

During her time as the head of URA, Akol significantly increased Uganda’s tax revenue, from shs8 billion in the financial year 2013/14 to shs14 billion in 2017/2018. She also oversaw the construction of URA’s 18-floor headquarters building at Nakawa.

Before joining the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Akol worked as a partner at Dentons’ Kampala office.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Makerere University and a postgraduate Diploma in Law Practice from the Law Development Centre. Additionally, she earned a Master of Laws degree from McGill University in Canada.

Akol received the African Woman in Leadership Award at the Women Development Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, on September 1, 2018, in recognition of her exceptional service and leadership qualities.
