Uganda is hosting the inaugural Africa Dragon Boat Cup from October 1 to 4, bringing together 119 participants from seven countries for a continental water-sports competition on Lake Victoria. The event has brought athletes and participants from Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Italy, Germany and Uganda, positioning Lake Victoria as a potential destination for marine sports, adventure and sports tourism.

The competition is being held in partnership with the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation as part of efforts to promote water-based sporting activities while showcasing Uganda’s tourism attractions to an international audience. The arrival of the foreign participants has also provided an opportunity to introduce visitors to Ugandan culture. Participants received a cultural welcome at Entebbe International Airport as they arrived ahead of the competition.

Lake Victoria offers opportunities for boating, fishing, water sports and leisure tourism around Entebbe and other lakeside destinations.

For Uganda’s tourism sector, the event offers a platform to promote a side of the country’s tourism potential that extends beyond its established wildlife and nature attractions. Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake by surface area, provides opportunities for activities including boating, fishing, water sports and leisure tourism. Events such as the Africa Dragon Boat Cup can add a competitive sporting dimension to the lake while creating opportunities for hospitality businesses, transport providers, tour operators and other tourism-related enterprises.

The participation of teams and visitors from outside Africa also gives the event an international dimension. Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya bring participants from across the continent, while Italy and Germany broaden the field to European competitors. Uganda’s participation places local paddlers alongside international competitors on home waters.

Entebbe’s proximity to Lake Victoria and Entebbe International Airport gives it an advantage in hosting sports and tourism events.

Dragon boat racing is a team-based water sport in which crews paddle a long, narrow boat to the rhythm of a drummer. The sport has grown internationally through organised competitions and national federations, creating opportunities for countries to develop competitive teams while using the events to promote water-based recreation.

For Uganda, hosting the inaugural continental competition could help build greater visibility for the sport locally. It also aligns with broader efforts to diversify tourism products and attract visitors through experiences rather than relying exclusively on traditional sightseeing. The presence of international participants creates potential economic benefits beyond the competition itself. Visitors require accommodation, meals, transportation and other services, while accompanying activities can extend spending into the wider tourism economy. Entebbe and the wider Lake Victoria area are particularly positioned to benefit from such events because of their proximity to the international airport and the lake
