The Ballroom at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel was a scene of sophistication and high-level networking on Friday, June 5, 2026, as Journey to the Boardroom (JTB) celebrated its Cohort 3 Grand Finale. The evening’s black-tie theme, accented by midnight navy blue and gold, reflected the significance of the occasion as participants marked the successful completion of the program’s third cohort.
The event brought together diplomats, traditional leaders, corporate executives, and governance practitioners to celebrate a new generation of leaders equipped to serve in boardrooms and strengthen institutions across Africa.
A Call to Values: Leadership Lessons from Distinguished Guests

The evening was graced by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, who delivered a powerful message on the essence of leadership and personal values. He reminded graduates that effective leadership is rooted in integrity, discipline, and a commitment to creating value.
“Practice reading boring literature. Guard your integrity. Focus on creating value.”
He also underscored the importance of collaboration in leadership.
“You cannot lead alone.”

Similarly, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Lisa Chesney MBE, challenged participants to embrace courage and accountability in leadership.
“Strong institutions are not built accidentally; they are built by people.”
“Governance failures don’t come from ignorance, but from choosing comfort.”
The Cohort 3 Experience: Unlearning and Relearning
Representing the graduating class, Cohort 3 President Ian Rumanyika shared reflections on the transformative nature of the program.

Despite his extensive professional experience, Rumanyika admitted that he initially questioned whether he needed the program.
“”Three weeks into the program, I realized I had to let go of my ego, unlearn, and relearn,”
He expressed gratitude to the Governing Council, facilitators, and fellow participants for creating a learning environment that challenged perspectives and fostered growth.

JTB Founder Janet Navvuga Bugembe reinforced the evening’s message with a call to action.
“Do not wait for someone to hand you a seat at the table. Prepare yourself for it!”
A Night of Honours: The Cohort 3 Award Winners
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the JTB Awards, recognizing individuals and syndicate teams that demonstrated excellence throughout the cohort.
Fuhad Ntale received the prestigious Founders Award in recognition of his leadership, commitment to personal growth, and active engagement throughout the program.

In the team categories, Harvard Holdings emerged winners of the Boardroom Award, recognized for their strategic execution, financial insight, and performance in governance simulations.

The coveted JTB Governance Award was won by The Sentinels, whose performance stood out for strong adherence to governance principles, compliance frameworks, and ethical leadership.

Team Oracles finished as First Runner-Up in the JTB Governance Award category, earning praise for their analytical approach and collaborative strategic thinking.

Facilitators were also recognized with special tokens of appreciation for their contribution to the success of the cohort.
Among the notable guests in attendance were Justice Mike Chibita and the Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to Uganda, H.E. Mourad Amokrane, reflecting the program’s growing influence across both diplomatic and professional circles.
Major Milestones: The JTB Foundation and Magazine Launch
The Grand Finale also marked two significant milestones for the Journey to the Boardroom initiative.
The JTB Foundation was officially unveiled, with an aim to expand access to leadership and governance education for future participants. The foundation received its first contribution from Node Group, which donated UGX 2 million to support the initiative.

The event also saw the launch of the latest edition of the JTB Magazine, titled From Influence to Impact, a publication that showcases insights, experiences, and thought leadership from members of the growing JTB alumni network.

An Atmosphere of Corporate Excellence
Beyond the speeches and awards, the evening provided an opportunity for meaningful networking and professional engagement. A live band performance added to the atmosphere, creating a balance between celebration and reflection as participants connected with peers, mentors, and industry leaders.
As the curtain falls on Cohort 3, graduates leave not only as alumni but as ambassadors of ethical leadership and good governance. With the support of its partners, facilitators, and leadership team, Journey to the Boardroom continues to shape leaders who are prepared to strengthen institutions and drive sustainable impact across Uganda and beyond.
