In a swift and decisive move that has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s energy sector, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has initiated a high-level shake-up at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited.
Announced on May 2, 2026, the decision signals a firm shift toward stricter oversight and accountability, as government moves to reinforce the operational integrity of the country’s power distribution system.
The intervention has seen the immediate termination of the Board Chairperson. At the same time, the Managing Director has been placed on forced leave. These actions are intended to allow a full and independent review of the company’s management and operations without internal interference.
While the Ministry has described the move as part of routine governance and oversight, the speed and scale of the action suggest a deeper effort to address inefficiencies that may have been affecting performance. It sends a clear message that leadership within critical national institutions will be held to higher standards.
To maintain stability, interim leadership has already been put in place. An Acting Board Chairperson has been appointed to guide strategic direction, while an Acting Managing Director is overseeing daily operations. These temporary arrangements will remain until permanent appointments are made through a formal selection process.
The Ministry has also reassured the public that electricity supply will not be disrupted. Despite the leadership changes, operations are expected to continue normally, ensuring that households and businesses remain unaffected during the transition.
