In today’s interconnected and rapidly evolving business environment, organisations are expected to do more than deliver on their mandates. They must also build trust, cultivate meaningful partnerships and engage stakeholders in ways that create long-term value. As a result, stakeholder mapping and engagement have become essential organisational capabilities that enable institutions to strengthen credibility, improve collaboration and achieve sustainable impact.
Recognising the growing importance of these capabilities, Node Group Consult recently conducted a Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement Training for staff of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU). The programme was designed to strengthen the institute’s internal capacity to strategically identify, analyse, prioritise and engage its diverse stakeholder groups in support of its institutional objectives and long-term strategy.
The engagement forms part of Node Group Consult’s broader commitment to supporting organisations through capacity building, leadership development, strategic communication and organisational transformation initiatives that enhance employee capabilities and improve institutional effectiveness.
During the training, participants were equipped with practical knowledge and tools to better understand stakeholder dynamics and develop targeted engagement strategies. The sessions covered stakeholder identification and analysis, development of stakeholder engagement registers, stakeholder categorisation using the Power-Interest Matrix (Mendelow’s Matrix), engagement planning, communication strategies, and approaches for building and sustaining long-term stakeholder relationships.
Through interactive discussions, practical exercises and real-world applications, participants explored how stakeholder engagement extends beyond routine communication to become a strategic organisational function. The training emphasised that successful stakeholder relationships are built through intentional engagement, consistent communication, mutual understanding and the ability to respond effectively to stakeholder expectations.
“Effective stakeholder engagement is not simply about communicating with people. It is about understanding who matters most to your organisation, recognising their interests and influence, and building relationships that create shared value over time.”
For a professional institution such as ICPAU, whose work touches a broad range of stakeholders, including members, regulators, government agencies, the business community, academia and the public, a structured stakeholder engagement framework is critical. It strengthens collaboration, builds stakeholder confidence and ensures that programmes and initiatives remain responsive to the needs of those they serve.

Speaking after the training, Lydia Tusiime, Manager, Business Development at ICPAU, commended the programme and expressed appreciation for the knowledge shared.
“Today’s training was both insightful and very timely, and we greatly appreciate the knowledge and practical perspectives shared with us. Many thanks to you and your team for the kind gesture and commitment to strengthening our relationship.”
